Only 9 percent among 70 new HIV cases in Albania were homosexuals
70 new cases with HIV in Albania, 41 percent are in the AIDS phase, only 9 percent homosexuals during 2012
Olimbi Hoxhaj, the Executive Director of the Albanian Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS who si closely working with the National Institute for Public Health, shared with historiaime.al the main statistics of the people infected by HIV/ AIDS in Albania. From January till November 2012 there were 70 new cases identified and diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS making the total sum of the infected from HIV/AIDS in our country (Albania) to 555 cases in total (without including here those who still don’t know or are not aware of their situation).
70% (390 cases) of them are male and 30% (165) are female. 51 new cases of males and 19 new cases of females were diagnosed this year with HIV/AIDS in 2012 in Albania.
The sexual intercourse still remains the main form of transmission for the HIV virus in Albania. 84% among 70 new cases are heterosexual population, while only 9% of them belong to the GB and T population.
